Until That Day

Until That Day - Original Oil Painting (with signed reference photo/print)

Canvas size 16x20 (overall framed size is approximately 22x26)

Until that day,
I was a depressed boy—
An anxious boy—
Beaten down by my own mind
Wondering what it was like to feel

Until that day,
I believed in nothing
I believed in no one
I didn’t believe in my own self
My empty thoughts were just that

Until that day,
I had felt nothing—
Nothing had felt me
It took a lot to fake the smile
Trust me when I say I tried

Until that day,
I wanted to know happiness—
I wanted to know love—
Even if it meant feeling pain
I wanted to feel something

On that day,
My heart started to soften—
My eyes started to open
I witnessed the sunflowers--
One in particular

On that day,
The sunflower taught me
It gave me hope
We had so much in common
It helped me understand

On that day,
The sunflower showed me how—
How to let go of my worries—
And to look forward—
To the sunshine of the next day

Every summer, an orchard nearby has a few weeks where acres and acres of sunflowers are in full bloom. I used one of my photos that I took that day as a reference for this painting.

The entire painting, much like my other work, was completely done with a palette knife. I applied more paint to certain parts of the canvas to give it more depth, so that it appears more realistic, yet dreamy, and gives it a more three dimensional look. The flow of the paint goes in every direction to keep things lively.

It’s mounted in a copper upcycled wooden frame that really makes the deep colors of the painting stand out. Upon purchase, I’ll include a free signed print of the actual photo that I used as a reference.
