First To Bloom - Original Oil Painting

Canvas size 14x18 (overall framed size is approximately 23x27)

The first Iris of the season to bloom— quietly waiting on the others to arrive so that they can all enjoy springtime together.

This started off as a side project to test a different painting style. Once it was finished, I was happy with the look but thought it would look much better in a heavy impasto style. Instead of moving to a new canvas, I decided to use the first painting as a ‘template’ and build a new painting on top of it. I kept adding layers and layers of paint until I had the look I wanted. To top off the painting, I then used particles of diamond dust before varnishing it. This makes the painting sparkle as your eyes move from one part of the canvas to the other. The sparkles display a full spectrum of colors. This, combined with the impasto style is almost hypnotic and a joy to observe. Note, diamond dust is not glitter, but very small pieces of glass that I’ve hidden inside of the grooves of the paint (created by the palette knife).
