After The Rain At Cathedral Rock - Original Oil Painting

Canvas size 16x12 (overall framed size is approximately 23x19)

Painting #2 of a five piece Sedona rock formation series

Alone with the raindrops—
Along a rain-soaked red trail
The soft powder turned rusty—
While my burdens, they fell

Faintly I heard whispers—
Behind a gloomy gray veil
As the butte started speaking—
I knew her voice well

She said “look up above you”—
And the clouds bid farewell
The spires and their splendor—
Once again they prevail

Being here in the red rocks—
It all feels like a fairytale
This without question—
Can heal your hearts ail

Cathedral Rock with a setting sun, after an afternoon rain. This is #2 of a five piece series that I’m doing of famous Sedona rock formations.

This view of Cathedral Rock is from Baldwin Trail. Having hiked around Cathedral Rock on this particular afternoon and getting soaked by several heavy rains along the way, we rounded a corner near Oak Creek to be met by this beautiful site. I wanted to bring the feeling of the entire day into this single image. It’s done in an impasto/pointillism style with heavy dabs of paint applied to the canvas. The painting is mounted inside a beautiful golden frame that I lightly stained with a hickory finish.
